You know how serious we are about safety here at Earth Mama Angel Baby. And we always want to pass on information that mamas can use to keep their babies safe. This is another month when we are smacking our foreheads wondering what it will take for personal care product companies to stop using ingredients that contain toxins. And we’re pretty sure we know the answer: it takes a village of mamas getting angry enough to say, “Stop!” It takes public education and outcry and for the companies to do the right thing. So this newsletter is dedicated to you, the concerned mama, learning all she can about what’s best for her baby.

Toxic Tub Terror Eased by Earth Mama
It sounds like a 50’s horror flick, but there has been a lot frightening news about what goes into baby products, and we say, “It’s about time!” The Toxic Tub report from the Environmental Working Group shines a light on the hidden dangers in personal care products made especially for babies. The information is scary — 61% of the children’s bath products tested contained toxic contaminants that are a byproduct of common petrochemical and synthetic ingredients. While some companies might be aware of and irresponsible about these toxins, others are simply ignorant. When a company uses petrochemicals they run the risk of having toxic contaminants in their products, and there’s no way for the regular consumer to tell if the product they have purchased contains those hidden toxins. If our phone banks are any indication, this news has a lot of mamas worried.

We’ll take this opportunity to assure you that Earth Mama Angel Baby products are — and have always been — free from petrochemicals and toxins of any kind. We don’t use fragrance oils (a potential source of phthalates), artificial preservatives (which can deteriorate into formaldehyde) or even natural-sounding Grapefruit seed extract  (which itself is often contaminated by parabens or other chemical preservatives). And we don’t use petroleum products, which require ingredients to reduce skin’s irritation to petroleum, which in turn can turn to toxic 1,4-Dioxane. To us the word organic is sacred, and all of our ingredients are disclosed on our labels. If it sounds like we have a recycled wood chip on our shoulder, it’s because we get all itchy and irritated when we see “natural” products that are misleading mamas. People are being deceived by confusing information, and we believe they have a right to make informed decisions. Products that make organic claims and then include cheap ingredients that can be tainted with toxic contaminants frustrate us: we use the “O” word and logo only when that claim is backed by independent third party certification.
