Even though we're all long out of school here at Earth Mama Angel Baby, fall fills us with that "fresh mind, new pencil, crisp clothes, back-to-school" feeling. And Mama wants to share with you the three R's we learn around here: Really great products, Radically different thinking, and Reassuring your minds!
We're always looking out for mamas and babies, and we want to make sure you have the best information and safest products for you and your little angel. There's a lot of talk right now about "natural," "organic," and "preservative-free" ingredients, concepts that Mama is passionate about. And there's a lack of clear, concise information about just how natural, organic or preservative-free some of these ingredients are. We think it's important to translate ingredient lists into common mama-talk, to help clear up the confusion.

So we are going to focus our upcoming newsletters on ingredients commonly found in personal care products that we think you should know a whole lot more about - especially in products made for babies and their mamas. We hope that you use our newsletters as a springboard to do your own research and decide for yourself whether your family is comfortable using these ingredients. And we hope that, as we all become better-educated consumers, companies will start labeling their products more clearly. Or better yet, completely stop using these questionable ingredients!

Mama's Natural Nipple Butter is the first organic, all natural, plant-based balm made without lanolin. Mama has some very serious concerns about using lanolin anywhere on baby, and especially on a mama's breast! Lanolin is one of those products that sounds great if you don't look too closely. After all, it is produced by a fuzzy, adorable sheep, how much more natural can you get? While lanolin is an effective moisture barrier, there are very real concerns about allergic reactions and toxic chemical contamination while using it. Many people have allergic reactions to wool, causing itching and rashes, and they just don't want to take chances using lanolin on their nipples and their babies! A sheep would also thank you for not using lanolin; the extraction process is pretty brutal for our fuzzy friends. But most concerning is that a sheep's life makes it likely to be in contact with a host of pesticides (used for ticks and lice, as well as on the food crop) and other toxins associated with non-organic farming. Traces of these toxic and carcinogenic chemicals end up in the lanolin (some studies have even found long-banned DDT!), and are surely not something you'd want to rub on your baby. Trace residues can remain on and in a mother's breast area, and then when a baby latches on to breastfeed there is a concern that the baby could ingest them.

It's scary stuff, and Mama prefers to offer options that take away any of those fears and concerns. That's why Natural Nipple Butter contains organic ingredients, is certified vegan, and is safe for both nursing mamas and babies. More than just a moisture barrier, Natural Nipple Butter has healing calendula, cocoa butter, shea butter and mango butter for cracked, dry nipples. There's no need to wash it off before nursing, and it's hospital and lactation consultant recommended. Leave it to Mama to ease your mind, while she eases nipple discomfort!

Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) is another good example of why you have to do your homework when purchasing "natural" and "organic" products. All personal care products that contain water require some form of preservative, or the mold and bacteria that would grow in it would present a hazard much worse than any preservative! Preservative safety is a hot-button issue, with lots of mamas eschewing parabens due to allergy concerns, and looking for alternatives to other preservatives that could break down and release carcinogens. And Grapefruit Seed Extract sure sounds natural! But GSE is a chemically altered form of grapefruit seed, one with questionable abilities to preserve without adding preservatives to preserve the GSE. Kinda seems to defeat the purpose, huh? There are enough questions that come up when you look at an ingredient list, and something as natural sounding as grapefruit seed extract shouldn't have to cause concern.
Once again, Mama doesn't want you to have to worry about any of that. That's why she doesn't use GSE, or parabens, or other artificial preservatives. Instead, Earth Mama Angel Baby products use either powerful antioxidants, like Vitamin E, or an ingenious double-whammy organic herbal extract. The same beneficial healing herbs that are extracted as an organic tincture for efficacy are good for your skin as well as good for the product's shelf life! You can read the ingredients of every Earth Mama Angel Baby product, with clear definitions of the official Latin plant names right there. And if you still have questions, you can always talk to someone right here at Earth Mama Central.
