Some months we think we're going to be all about sweets for your sweethearts, and offering you something as precious as roses, without the thorns, and then some big news hits and we end up talking all technical. That's what happened this month, and if you saw the news at all in the last couple of weeks you know that phthalates have been making big headlines. Worried mamas have been calling and emailing us for our assurances and we are proud to say, as always, that we can give them, along with some information so you can be an aware consumer. That's not to say we don't have the sweet and precious goodies, we've still got loads of balms and lotions on sale for you, keeping that loving feeling going strong all through February! We're also introducing another member of our Expert Panel, and both experts have some help for mamas suffering from morning sickness. |
Phthalates, You and Your Baby
Concerned about phthalates in your baby lotion? So were we, way back six years ago when Earth Mama Angel Baby® was founded, and that's why we have never, and will never use phthalates in any of our products. But a new study, released in the February issue of Pediatrics, has raised awareness of this worrisome issue, and we want to help educate and ease the minds of alarmed mamas.
Products like baby lotion, baby shampoo, baby oil, and soaps usually contain "fragrance" among the ingredients. But so do body care products for adults, even lotions and creams for pregnant women carrying developing babies. Even though fragrance is listed, the potentially harmful cocktail of ingredients that make up fragrance does not have to be disclosed to consumers. These artificial fragrances most often include phthalates; chemicals that make fragrances stay on the skin longer. The problem is, phthalates have also been linked to developmental issues in animal studies. There is no clear evidence that phthalates causes reproductive or developmental issues in humans, but as more studies are done, and more hidden ingredients are exposed, more concerns arise.
"Phthalates are often undisclosed on ingredient lists," explains Earth Mama Angel Baby® founder Melinda Olson. "Artificial fragrances, which often contain phthalates, are exactly the type of ingredient that we would never consider using. We publish on our web site and on every label a complete list of every ingredient. I believe that our mamas should be able to buy our products and feel safe using them on their biggest miracles - their angel babies."
One of the other concerns of phthalate -contamination is from plastics such as baby bottles.
Phthalates also show up in some plastics. Some plastics are known to leach a bisphenol A, antimony and phthalate contamination. And all that is scary stuff, but you should know that all plastics are not equal. After much research (and when a mama cut herself on a glass jar that had been broken in the mail) we chose to put our products in PET plastic containers, because it's the safest, hardest, and most easily recyclable plastic that does not interact with our ingredients, even pure essential oils. And even though PET stands for polyethylene terephthalate and sounds like it is made with phthalates PET is not the kind of phthalate that is being talked about. The type of phthalate causing concern is used to make various plastics more flexible, called a "plasticizer." PET does not contain plasticizers or the type of phthalate that is used in plasticizers.
Our first concern is that all of our products be pure and safe, with worry-free ingredients, and worry free packaging. That's why you'll never find any artificial ingredients in any Earth Mama Angel Baby products, ever. There is nothing in any of our products that is not safe and pure for mamas, babies, and anyone else who might be using them. We've had concerns about phthalates for years - we also worry about sodium laurel sulfates and parabens, among other common personal care product ingredients, so we just don't use them in our products. We seek out the best organic and natural ingredients, and find ways to keep everything simple, pure and effective. We don't cut corners, so we don't need to use cost-saving foaming agents, fillers and artificial fragrances. We believe the mamas who trust Earth Mama Angel Baby® want only the best for their families, and we are here to provide it.
