Poor mama! Morning sickness sounds so quaint! A little touch of sick, but once you pop out of bed it's over, right?
But those who know, know when you get the queasies from rampaging pregnancy hormones, morning sickness can hit at any time of the day (forget the "morning" ), and last and last. It can range from feeling nauseous to violent vomiting. Some mamas can' t even keep liquids down. And everyone from the produce lady to the mailman has advice on a miracle cure, but what you want is safe, practical comfort and relief.

It may be comforting to know you're not alone. About three-quarters of all pregnant women will get some form of morning sickness, though every mama can have a different experience. It won't really last forever, it just feels like it will! Though the exact cause of morning sickness is unclear, it is believed to be caused by the sudden boost in hormones. Your mama-body is doing what it was made to do, but sometimes that marvelous gift feels downright miserable.
Here are some ideas for you, but remember, you should ALWAYS talk to your healthcare provider before using any supplements, herbs or other treatments during your pregnancy, and take morning sickness seriously so you don' t become dehydrated or have other side effects.

Try to keep your tummy from becoming completely empty. The old crackers-by-the-bedside trick can work because carbohydrates break down much more quickly than fats or proteins, and are often easier to digest.
If your prenatal vitamin turns you green, ask your doctor or midwife about switching to a food-based vitamin, which can be more easily tolerated, and try taking it at night. And while you have your THP (trusted healthcare provider) on the phone, ask about taking extra vitamin B6.

Since it is important to make sure you stay well hydrated, especially if you are vomiting, try sipping smaller amounts of fluids throughout the day. Mama created Morning Wellness Tea for just this reason. It is a soothing blend of 100% USDA organic herbs that can be brewed and sipped throughout the day as needed (up to two cups). Morning Wellness Tea includes ginger root, peppermint and chamomile, which the American Botanical Council supports as safe and effective to help ease pregnancy nausea. It's important that you keep track of all your sources of herbs to avoid using too much.
As always, we strongly encourage women to consult a trusted healthcare provider who is knowledgeable about the use of herbs during pregnancy.

Ginger and lime are the aromatherapy scents that have worked the best for our mamas, especially the unique blend we use in Happy Mama Spray. The scent of peppermint essential oil can also be very soothing. Spritzing your wrist, or a small piece of cloth to smell when you're at the grocery store or around offending odors can help.

Morning sickness can be so debilitating, and many mamas commonly try several remedies before they find something works for them. It's the beginning of that less-glamorous-than-the-movies journey of pregnancy. But the end result is always a lot more spectacular than any movie your Angel Baby is all yours! |
